About the Conference

Background & rationale

In East Africa, as in other parts of the continent, the higher education sector is undergoing transformation. National systems are under pressure to shift towards more relevance, inclusivity, and responsiveness to the rapid social, economic, and technological evolutions taking place.

However, the speed of these transformations is uneven across Partner States. While some countries and institutions have made significant progress, others still face structural, financial, and institutional constraints that risk widening disparities within the region.

This moment for East Africa is a tipping point: a critical juncture where reforms will determine whether the region builds a system that works together, crosses borders, and prepares students for tomorrow — or one where fragmentation grows wider and inequality deepens.

The forum will provide a platform for the official launch of the IUCEA Strategic Plan (2026–2031) and initiation of new collaborations and partnerships for transforming higher education across East Africa.
